The word and meaning of "unification" must never be taken lightly. It is a profound task that determines the destiny of a nation and the lives of millions. Yet, when pursued with closed hearts—armed too heavily with ideology and rigid doctrines—it only becomes more difficult. The past 80 years of division between North and South Korea have proven this truth.
I often compare "unification" to the Gordian knot. Entangled in countless threads, the knot seemed impossible to untie, until Alexander cut through it with a single stroke. In the same way, let me share the story of one family, the life of two brothers.
The two brothers grew up within the same fence. The elder brother was diligent, caring for his family and living peacefully with his neighbors. The younger brother, however, fell into drinking and fighting, disturbing the community, gathering weapons, and spreading fear. The elder brother never abandoned him, always holding on to hope, but the threats never ceased. Finally, the elder brother made a decision: he allowed the younger brother to live separately. At first, the younger brother rejoiced in his newfound freedom, but his destructive habits did not change. A few years later, he returned, kneeling before his elder brother, asking to be accepted again. The elder brother, torn between anger and compassion, said: ¡°Brother, I have waited for you to return. But this time, you must truly change.¡±
This story is the essence of The Two States Theory and the vision of unification. It teaches us that only through separation and coexistence can genuine transformation and reconciliation become possible.
Unification cannot be achieved through slogans or hardened positions. It requires open hearts, mutual respect, and a willingness to move beyond ideology. If approached with suspicion and hostility, the knot will only tighten. But with patience, humility, and vision, the knot can be untied.
The conclusion is clear: unification is not a matter of force, but of transformation. It is not about imposing one system upon another, but about creating space for change, trust, and eventual return. Only then can the dream of lasting peace and true unification be realized.
